How to Plan a Turkey Trip (Step-by-Step)
Route planning, how many days per city, domestic flights, visa, budget and when to book — everything in one planning guide.
Classic first-timer route
Istanbul (3 days) → Cappadocia (2–3 days) → Ephesus/Pamukkale (2 days) is the most popular 7–8 day circuit. We customize pace and hotels to your style.
Step 1 — Pick your route and duration
First-timers: Istanbul (3 days) + Cappadocia (2–3 days) + Ephesus/Pamukkale (2 days) in 7–8 days. Add Antalya or Bodrum for beach time on 10–14 day trips. Repeat visitors target Trabzon, Mardin or Safranbolu — see /plan-your-trip topical map.
Step 2 — Check visa and passport rules
Confirm e-Visa or visa-free status at evisa.gov.tr before buying flights. US, Canada, Australia and India typically need e-Visa; UK and many EU passports are visa-free for tourism. Passport valid 6+ months beyond return. Full detail: /travel-guide/turkey-visa.
Step 3 — Book international flights
Istanbul IST is the main hub. Izmir and Antalya suit Aegean/coast starts. Open-jaw tickets (arrive Istanbul, depart Izmir) save backtracking on one-way domestic routes.
Step 4 — Domestic flights and transfers
Fly Istanbul→Kayseri for Cappadocia (75 minutes), Istanbul→Izmir for Ephesus. Night buses exist but cost a full day. We bundle domestic flights in /turkey-tour-packages.
Step 5 — Hotels and pacing
Match hotel zones to tours — Sultanahmet, Goreme cave hotels, Kusadasi for Ephesus. Build rest afternoons in summer heat. Honeymoon and luxury tiers upgrade cave suites and Bosphorus properties.
Step 6 — Tours, balloons and quotes
Book Cappadocia balloons 4–6 weeks ahead in peak season. Private day tours beat shared buses for pacing. Send dates to /contact for a written itinerary within 24 hours — TURSAB-licensed (#14817), private-only guiding.
When to book
Flights 2–3 months ahead for peak season. Cappadocia balloon and cave hotels 4–6 weeks minimum. We handle domestic flights in packages.
Budget planning
Mid-range private tours run $100–200/day per person excluding hotels. Turkey offers strong value vs Western Europe.
Visa checklist
Confirm e-Visa or visa-free status before booking. US, Canada, Australia and India need e-Visa; UK and EU are visa-free for tourism.
