Top Things to Do in Istanbul

Why Istanbul belongs on every Turkey itinerary

Istanbul is the only city on two continents — a living museum where Byzantine mosaics, Ottoman palaces and contemporary art districts sit side by side. Sultanahmet packs Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and Topkapi into walkable blocks, while Beyoglu and Kadikoy offer street food, design shops and Bosphorus views without the cruise-ship crowds. Most first-time visitors need at least three full days to do the Old City justice and still leave time for a Bosphorus cruise or Asian-side markets.

Best time to visit Istanbul

April–May and September–October offer mild weather and manageable queues at major sites. Summer is busy but evenings on the Bosphorus are magical. Winter brings fewer tourists and lower hotel rates — ideal if you prefer museums over outdoor terraces. Ramadan and major holidays can shift restaurant hours; we adjust touring schedules accordingly on private trips.

Getting around with a private guide

Istanbul's tram and metro connect airports to Sultanahmet, but a private vehicle saves time when combining Dolmabahce Palace, the Asian side and airport transfers in one day. Our licensed guides skip generic commentary and route you through side entrances at busy sites when possible. Hotel pickup in Sultanahmet, Karakoy or Besiktas is standard on every Istanbul tour we operate.

Combining Istanbul with Cappadocia or the coast

Most travelers fly Istanbul to Kayseri (Cappadocia) in just over an hour, making the classic two-city route easy in six to eight days. Alternatively, add Ephesus via a short domestic flight to Izmir or extend to Antalya for beach time. See our Istanbul & Cappadocia package or ask for a custom multi-city quote — we handle flights, hotels and guiding in one itinerary.
